Rebels Close Out Woeful Season
Unlike the 2001, 2002, and 2006 seasons that ended on a high note for the Rebels 2007 did not. UNLV ended with an eight game loosing streak landing them in cellar in the Mountain West and another two win season. Even more disgraceful is the fact that the Rebels have a 15 game road conference loosing streak.TCU and New Mexico routed the Rebels as both teams combined to score 61 points on a much maligned UNLV defense. The offense which had suddenly made an appearance at San Diego State perhaps stayed at the airport as the Rebels only managed to tally 16 points in the two game span.
UNLV closed the season once again at the bottom of the Mountain West. The Sanford era currently has amassed six wins in three years. Despite the play the coaching staff feels the program is headed in the right direction. However, without success it’s hard to imagine that being the case.
Unless changes are made to really provide a spark to the program, next season could be Sanford’s final season in the city of sin. The Rebels offense appears to have a bright future. The development of duo freshmen quarterbacks in Omar Clayton and Travis Dixon. The running game looks to return strongly with Frank Summers being a senior next season.
The wide receiving corps also looks poised for another solid season as Casey Flair and Ryan Wolfe are set to return. The emergence of Rodelin Anthony also provides a third option for whoever takes the helm next season.
Perhaps the biggest voids left on the team will be seen on defense and special teams. The departure of Beau Belle at Linebacker and Sergio Aguayo at kicker will certainly leave the program reeling after very successful and distinguished careers by both players. One thing is for sure fans must now wait and see what Rebel Nation is able to deliver.
